Lake Highlands Secondary Growth

RISD will be holding two more parent & community informational meetings to discuss ideas to accommodate projected student enrollment growth and programmatic opportunities at the secondary level in Lake Highlands. Parents & community members are welcome to attend, learn more, ask questions & provide feedback. The first meeting was held at Lake Highlands High School on October 16. Two additional meetings will be held:

Tuesday, October 21 - Forest Meadow Junior High - 6:30pm
Thursday, October 23 - Lake Highlands Junior High - 6:30pm

Show Choirs Perform at Literacy Fundraiser

Show choirs from JJ Pearce (Forte) and Richardson High (Legacy) were featured performers at the Meyerson Symphony Center for the Dallas Celebration of Reading event, a fundraiser for the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy.

The event raises over one million dollars to help fund the Foundation's literacy initiatives.

Free DART Transportation to the State Fair

Students and district staff with unused complimentary State Fair tickets that were valid Monday, October 13 can use those tickets for admission and to ride DART bus and rail to the fair for free on Saturday, October 18 and Sunday, October 19. Eligible students and teachers must show their yellow ISD fair ticket at the DART station for a free ride to and from the fair.

Information about riding DART to the fair, as well as information for guests without the special student and teacher passes, is available at www.DART.org/StateFair.

Fire Prevention Week at O. Henry

O. Henry Elementary recently hosted members of the Garland Fire Department for Fire Prevention Week. During their visit, firefighters gave students fire safety tips, showed them how to "Stop, Drop, and Roll" during a fire emergency and allowed students to tour the inside of a fire truck.

While studying their unit on community helpers, kindergartners and first graders had the opportunity to meet some of our real-life, local heroes.

District Tennis Teams Advance

Congratulations to the three RISD tennis teams advancing to the area tournament after qualifying with a top four finish in the district tournament.

Lake Highlands HS finished second in the Distict 10-6A Tournament, while Berkner HS finished third and Richardson HS fourth.

Best of luck to all three teams in the area tournament.

October is Dyslexia Awareness Month

RISD's Dyslexia Program is hosting a parent meeting on October 29 from 6:30- 8:30pm at the RISD Professional Development Center. The agenda includes the dyslexia curriculum used in RISD, 504 accommodations and the opportunity to meet RISD dyslexia teachers. Any RISD parent is encouraged to attend.

Pearce Pacesetter Bazaar

The JJ Pearce Pacesetters Drill Team will host their Holiday Bazaar on Saturday, October 25 from 9:00am- 5:00pm and Sunday, October 26 from 11:00am- 5:00pm at Pearce High School. Admission is free and it is open to the public. There will be more than 200 vendors along with with baked goods, handcrafted items and much more.

You can also stop by the Café or Snack Shack to purchase delicious food sponsored by several local restaurants.

Lake Highlands Area Choir Concert

The Lake Highlands area choirs will perform their fall concert at the Lake Highlands High School auditorium on Monday, October 20 at 7:30pm. The show will feature the Men's, Women's and Mixed Choirs from Forest Meadow JH, LHJH, LH Freshman Center and LHHS. The choirs are excited to share what they've been working on. The show is free and open to the public.

Toyland Express at Network

The Network of Community Ministries is hosting Toyland Express to help families in need with holiday gifts for children. The Network of Community Ministries is a primary service provider for RISD families in need. We are asking for the community's support with toys or monetary donations to make the holidays brighter for many district students.

Donations of new and unwrapped toys can be dropped off at 741 South Sherman Street in Richardson through Oct. 31.

Teen Driver Safety Week

State Farm presents Celebrate My Drive for National Teen Driver Safety Week October 15-24. All four RISD high schools are participating and you can show support and give them a chance to win grant money or a grand prize concert by the Band Perry. Anyone over the age of 14 can go to celebratemydrive.com, select your school of choice and make a safe driving commitment once daily per email. The top 100 high schools across the nation with the most commitments will be awarded grants.

Local State Farm agents will be on hand at the October 24 Varsity football games at both Wildcat/Ram and Eagle/Mustang with information and giveaways.
