Board Activity - September 14 Regular Meeting

The RISD Board met on September 14 and discussed several topics.

Choice & Non-Traditional High School Programs
Board members heard a presentation from staff and discussed the possibility of constructing a 21st century learning center that would house two separate programs open to any high school student in RISD. The first program would be non-traditional in nature and provide a setting for accelerated instruction for students whose schedule or life circumstances don't fit with a traditional high school format. RISD is the only suburban 6A district in Texas that doesn't offer a daytime non-traditional program.

The new school would also offer students a program of targeted dual credit instruction that would allow them to graduate high school with up to two years of college credit and possibly an associate's degree. The early college high school program would be open to students from across RISD.

The school would also include enhanced professional development labs for teachers and robust technology integration. Construction of a 21st century learning center would be contingent on a bond passing in 2016.

District Improvement Plan Adopted
The state requires each school district to annually adopt a district improvement plan that outlines goals and objectives for the coming school year. RISD Trustees voted to adopt the 2015-16 District Improvement Plan (DIP), which will guide each RISD school in adoption of campus improvement plans. RISD's priority goals for 2015-16, as outlined in the DIP, include:

  • Ensure students graduate with at least three college credits or a career/technical certification or license
  • Recruit, develop and retain high-performing employees who learn, grow and succeed
  • Plan for and call Bond 2016 Election

Updated Operations Center Plans
The Board viewed updated site plans for an operations center to be constructed on vacant district land on Greenville Avenue north of Walnut St. The operations center would allow RISD to consolidate a number of central operations in support of continued enrollment growth and associated space needs. Support departments that would function out of the operations center include Bond Project Management, Child Nutrition, Facility Services, Library Technology, Purchasing, Print Shop, Testing/Accountability, Textbooks, Transportation and Warehouse. The RISD Bus Parking facility would continue to operate from its location near Greenville and Buckingham and will not be part of the operations center.

Grandparent's Day!

Springridge Elementary students and their grandparents recently celebrated Grandparents Day with hugs, pastries and smiles. Grandparents received a certificate of appreciation and pictures with their grandchildren.

Thank you to grandparents across RISD who take an active role in their grandchildren's school!

Reading All The Wade at Wallace

The Wade Smith Foundation recently launched its first "Read All The Wade" contest at Wallace Elementary. Before his career as a professional football player for the Houston Texans, Smith was a Wallace Wolverine and returned to his school to promote reading and share with students how it has helped him achieve his career goals.

Smith was measured, and grade levels are challenged between now and December to read enough books to surpass Wade's height. The winning grade level will receive an exciting gift from Wade when he returns to Wallace in April for the 5th Annual Wade Smith Foundation Charity Weekend.

We'll check back in April to see which class won - good luck to students and thank you to Wade Smith for giving back.
