Jennie Bates Named Westwood Principal
"I'm pleased to announce that Mrs. Jennie Bates has accepted the position of principal at Westwood Junior High," said Interim Superintendent Dr. Jeannie Stone. "She is a strong fit with the principal profile developed by parents and staff, and brings a highly effective blend of experience, energy and servant leadership to her new position. I ask parents, students and staff to join me in welcoming Jennie Bates to Westwood Junior High."
Bates is in her 20th year as an educator in RISD, and comes to Westwood from Lake Highlands Junior High, where she has served as an assistant principal since 2012. She began her career as a classroom science teacher, and has also served as a coach and instructional specialist.
She holds a bachelor's degree in Science Teaching from the University of Northern Colorado and a master's degree in Education from Southern Methodist University. She will assume her new duties immediately.
RISD Assigned Top Bond Ratings
Ratings agencies Moody's and Standard & Poor's recently affirmed RISD's stand-alone underlying bond ratings of Aaa and AA+, respectively. The ratings represent the highest underlying ratings assigned to a Texas school district, and is shared by just four other school districts in Texas.
Similar to a consumer's credit rating, a high bond rating reduces the amount of interest that school districts pay when issuing bonds to pay for capital expenses, saving tax dollars.
Both agencies cited RISD's strong financial management practices, healthy tax base and location within the growing DFW Metroplex as reasons for the high ratings. RISD is in the first year of a five year bond cycle of capital expenditures after voters approved Bond 2016 in May.
2016 STAAR 3-8 Results
RISD has received STAAR results from the State of Texas for students in grades 3-8 who took the assessment in the spring. A Confidential Student Report was mailed last week to parents at their home address.
Passing standards increased this school year on all STAAR tests, with more correct answers required for students to meet expectations under the Texas accountability system.
RISD students met or exceeded the state average passing rates on 16 of the 17 tests. Overall passing rates for RISD students increased on 12 of the 17 assessments.
