Jumping For Heart Health

Elementary schools across the district recently participated in Jump Rope for Heart activities and events to raise funds and awareness in support of heart health. Sponsored by the American Heart Association and led by P.E. teachers, "the Jump Rope for Heart program engages our students in heart-healthy education and activities, helping to develop active habits and fight childhood obesity," explains RISD Director of Health & P.E. Kellie Sellers.

Nine DI Teams Advancing to State Competition

Nine DI Teams Advancing to State Competition Destination Imagination is an extra-curricular program that encourages teams of learners to think creatively about real world problems and to offer solutions. Participants learn patience, flexibility, persistence, ethics, respect for others and their ideas, and the collaborative problem solving process.

Destination Imagination recently held its Dal-Rich Regional Tournament, with approximately 100 teams from RISD, Highland Park ISD and area private schools competing in different challenges. Nine RISD teams advanced to the state competition:

Bobcat Invaders, Brentfield - 3rd grade
Dragon Dreamers, Brentfield - 3rd grade
Gravity 6.0, Merriman Park - 4th grade
Hyper Hippies, Moss Haven - 5th grade
J-Walking Squirrels, Bowie - 6th grade
Storming Brains, West & Westwood - 7th grade
The Imaginators, Brentfield - 5th grade
The Team with the Really Long Name, Richardson HS - 10th grade
Thinky Dinks, Brentfield - 3rd grade

JHE Students Lauded for National Finish

Compass Learning recently paid a visit to Jess Harben El., rewarding students for a top five finish in a national video contest.

Compass supplied the cast with pizza and certificates in recognition of their successful effort.

New Principals Announced

Dr. Waggoner announced two new campus principals this week, at Forest Meadow Junior HIgh and Yale Elementary. Both new principals were selected at the conclusion of a process that involved staff and community input.

Ms. Kerri Jones, who has been the interim principal at Forest Meadow since December 1, was formally named the principal. Ms. Jones is in her ninth year with RISD, beginning as an assistant principal at Forest Meadow. She began her career in public education as a junior high math teacher, and holds a bachelor's degree in sociology from Ouachita Baptist University and a Master of Business Administration degree from Henderson State University.

Ms. Suzanne Mann is the new principal at Yale Elementary. Mann is in her 11th year with RISD, most recently serving as principal of Bukhair Elementary and previously working at Northlake Elementary, where she was an assistant principal. During her time with the district, she also has been an instructional specialist and a classroom teacher. Suzanne began her teaching career in Rockwall ISD; she holds a bachelor's degree in elementary education from the University of Oklahoma and a Master of Educational Administration degree from Texas A&M-Commerce.
