West Robotics State Runner Up
Three Richardson West JH robotics teams recently competed in the Texas State Championship in Greenville. West's 8th grade team finished second overall in Texas, and won the 2015 Texas VEX Robotics Design Award. The team is now qualified for the VEX World Championship in April.
"Congratulations to the team and sponsor Omar Pastrana," said principal Henry Hall. "Their hard work has been rewarded as one of just four middle school teams from Texas to qualify for the world competition."
Snow Make Up Dates
Per the 2014-15 RISD Student Academic Calendar, the district will make up this week's two snow days on Friday, April 3 and Friday, June 5. Both days were previously student holidays and will now be normal operating days.
Environmental Studies Center Turning 40
From its beginning in 1975, the goal of RISD's Environmental Studies Center has been to instill students with environmental awareness through first-hand experience of how the natural world works. Each year, the ESC hosts elementary classes year round at the wooded 12 acre preserve adjacent to Big Springs Elementary. Since it opened, the ESC has hosted approximately over 400,000 RISD students.
The ESC is observing its 40th anniversary with a March 28 Open House, and parents, graduates, and the public are invited.
"Not every district offers students an experience like the Environmental Center," says RISD Director of Elementary Science Laney Arndt. "It allows our teachers and Environmental Center Guides to provide outdoor real world examples of the science curriculum that students learn in the classroom. It's a true gem and one of the programs that makes RISD a unique experience for so many students and graduates."
Storyteller Excites, Inspires at ACE
Noted storyteller DeCee Cornish recently visited Audelia Creek Elem. as part of the school's recognition of Black History Month. His folk tales and historical stories, created from research and genealogy, enthralled students from all grade levels.

Spring Valley Athletic Association
The safety of students and staff is the top priority when poor weather creates hazardous travel conditions.
In the event that travel conditions may require classes be delayed or cancelled, parents and employees will be notified directly by telephone message before 6:30 a.m. Parents are encouraged to ensure their child's campus has up-to-date contact information.
In addition, stakeholders can check the RISD homepage, the district Facebook page or the district Twitter feed. RISD also notifies local media outlets of closures or delays.
If unsure, parents, employees and students should assume a normal school day unless notified of a closure or delay by RISD. The District does not send a message verifying a normal operating day. Parents are encouraged to ensue their child's school has up-to-date telephone and email information.
