2016 STARS Teachers of the Year Announced
Eight outstanding teachers were surprised in their classrooms this week with the news that they have been selected as RISD's STARS (Superior Teaching Achievement in RISD Schools) Teachers of the Year. The awards are administered by the Excellence in Education Foundation and winners are selected through a comprehensive process that begins with a school nomination and includes interviews and classroom observations. The STARS winners represent some of the finest educators in a district known for quality teachers.
A prize patrol, including Dr. Waggoner and members of the Excellence in Education Foundation board and selection committee, visited teachers in their classrooms with flowers, balloons and a check for $1,000. Special thanks to M&A Technology for being the primary sponsor of this year's awards.
Congratulations to the school nominees, district finalists and winners. Thank you for everything you do for students!
Pearce, Richardson Advance to State Academic Decathlon Competition
Congratulations to teams from Pearce High School and Richardson High School for advancing to the Texas Academic Decathlon competition.
Academic Decathlon is a program that provides high school students an opportunity to experience the challenges of spirited, rigorous academic competition through participation in team activities. In addition, the Academic Decathlon involves members of the business industry as active supporters of a program promoting academic excellence.
The state competition will be held February 26-28 in Irving. Good luck!
Focus Accounts Needed for Online Enrollment
In March, parents of current non-magnet elementary students in kindergarten through fifth grades will be able to enroll their children for the 2016-17 school year online. In order to enroll online, an active Focus Parent account will be required. Focus Parent accounts also allow parents to view their child's grade and attendance information online.
Online enrollment for secondary students will occur in late July, also through Focus.
Parents are encouraged to create a Focus Parent account if they have not already done so.

Parent Weather Reminder
As temperatures are cooling off and we prepare for the possibility that weather conditions may impact school schedules, please ensure your child’s school has up-to-date contact information, including an accurate phone number and email address.
When inclement weather arrives, RISD will notify parents and staff directly of any closures or delays, so please make sure the district can contact you.
