RISD Spelling Bee Champs

The Richardson ISD Spelling Bee competitions were held last week, which included a separate competition for each of RISD's four high school attendance areas among school champions from each feeder school. The winner and alternate from each Bee will now move on to the Dallas County Public Schools Bee, which will be held Wednesday, February 18 at the Dallas County Schools Technology & Training Building.

Instructional Materials Review & Public Hearing

RISD stakeholders are invited to review and comment on instructional materials under consideration for adoption in the areas of Social Studies (K-12), Mathematics (9-12), and Fine Arts. The materials will Include Career and Technical Education courses for mathematics or fine arts credit.

The materials will be on display for a Public Hearing on Monday, January 26, 2015, in the Professional Development Center gymnasium, 701 West Belt Line Road in Richardson, from 4:45 - 6:45 p.m.

Interested stakeholders may view the materials and share comments with the RISD selection committees.

Cotton Bowl Art Winner

Congratulations to Terrace El. student Kyra Miller for being named a first place winner in the 18th Annual AT&T Cotton Bowl Art Contest. Kyra's art work will be displayed at her school and at AT&T Stadium. More than 5,500 students participated in the contest from throughout the DFW area. Her art teacher is Linda Holt.

Big Springs Steps Up for Clothes Closet

Big Springs El. students recently collected more than 1,000 items to donate to the RISD Clothes Closet to assist district families in need. A clothes closet contest was sponsored by the Big Springs PTA, and the winning classroom enjoyed a party.

Mrs. Hoag's winning class collected 200 items and celebrated with a karaoke and hot chocolate party at the end of school, complete with disco lights and popcorn treats.

Thinking Kind In The News

With support from the RISD Council of PTAs, eight RISD elementary schools are participating in a movement known as Think Kind, and hosting assemblies encouraging students to perform everyday acts of kindness.

Students from Greenwood Hills, Lake Highlands, Merriman Park, Moss Haven, Northrich, Prestonwood, Richardson Terrace and Wallace elementary schools are embracing the challenge to Think Kind.

Pearce Athletics Update

The Pearce H.S. Mustangs boys soccer team is on a roll, winning two recent tournaments in Forney & Rockwall. The soccer program continues to build on last season's success in advancing to the third round of the UIL 5A State Championship.

The Mustang baseball program congratulates three seniors who recently signed their letters of intent to play baseball in college.

Malik Jones (L) and Davis Rodgers have signed to play at Weatherford College while Garrett Erickson will play at Midland College.

The safety of students and staff is the top priority when poor weather creates hazardous travel conditions.

In the event that travel conditions may require classes be delayed or cancelled, parents and employees will be notified directly by telephone message before 6:30 a.m. Parents are encouraged to ensure their child's campus has up-to-date contact information.

In addition, stakeholders can check the RISD homepage, the district Facebook page or the district Twitter feed. RISD also notifies local media outlets of closures or delays.

If unsure, parents, employees and students should assume a normal school day unless notified of a closure or delay by RISD. The District does not send a message verifying a normal operating day.
