Dr. Stone School Safety Message

February 20, 2018

Richardson ISD is deeply saddened by the tragic school shooting in Florida last Wednesday. Our sympathies are with the victims’ families and all those who knew and loved them.

While horrific events such as those in Florida place national spotlight on school safety, RISD focuses on these realities every day. The safety of our students - your children - and all persons at school has been, and will remain, a primary focus of the district.

Extensive safeguarding measures are in the forefront of the RISD Safety & Security Department. Its presence on campuses is demonstrated through fire drills, lockdown/lockout drills, periodic weapon scans, and tactical mapping procedures. The department also operates within the National Incident Management System (NIMS) - a federally supported, coordinated approach to incident management, applicable at all jurisdictional levels. Each campus maintains a safety plan specific to that campus.

RISD is also well-served through its strong relationship with law enforcement in each of the three cities in our district - Richardson, Dallas and Garland. At least one School Resource Officer (SRO) is present at all times on each of our high school and junior high school campuses. The district also has five SROs designated for elementary campuses.

Richardson ISD remains vigilant through the work of its Safety & Security Committee, formed 13 years ago. Comprised of emergency responders, emergency management, medical personnel and district personnel, the group collaborates and trains staff on safety audit procedures, school violence and hostage situations among other topics.

Vigilance and awareness are critical in maintaining safe schools. RISD knows and accepts these challenges. But an entire community effort is necessary for success. Please help us reinforce this message. Parents, talk to your child this evening about the importance of alerting a trusted adult to any action he or she may experience or witness that threatens the security of our campuses. Every safety-related concern reported to our staff is taken seriously and investigated.

I commit to you that your students are our top priority. It is a privilege to be entrusted with their education and safe-keeping while they are with us. We will continue to research the most effective

Sincerely,
Dr. Jeannie Stone
Superintendent
