District involved with court case regarding structure of school board elections

RISD has become part of a federal court case focused on the district’s electoral process for school board members. The case, which was served to RISD this week, alleges that the at-large election system used by RISD to elect Board members doesn’t comply with the Voting Rights Act.

Within the at-large structure, each school board member represents the entire district and is elected by eligible voters from across the entire district. In contrast, a single-member structure would divide the district into separate, smaller geographical boundaries, each to be represented by one board member and elected solely by residents from within the smaller boundaries.

“The Board understands that our stakeholders have interest in this case,” said Justin Bono, President of the RISD Board of Trustees. “It is a complex matter, and the Board will work diligently to fully understand the details of the case and ultimately make decisions on the best course of action for the District. As this is a pending court case, we hope the community understands that our responses and remarks have to be within the context of the appropriate legal settings moving forward.

“With this said, there are many great things happening in RISD, and that won’t change,” Bono said. “Our Board has been and continues to be committed to serving our diverse student body and their families that call our district home. We will continue to promote success for 100 percent of our students, and provide the best tools and support for all of our staff.”
