Richardson ISD has record-breaking number of Dell Scholar semifinalists

Semifinalists have been announced for the Dell Scholars Program Class of 2018 and RISD is celebrating a record 20 AVID students among those recognized.

All four of RISD’s high school campuses produced a qualifier with Richardson HS tallying the most at 12. Berkner followed with four, Pearce three and Lake Highlands HS one. These 20 now go on to compete as individuals for $20,000 in college funding, a laptop and textbook credits. Winners will be announced April 18.

An initiative of the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation, the program is designed to recognize students who have overcome significant obstacles in pursuit of their educations. Greater emphasis is placed on a student’s determination to succeed than just academic record and test scores.

A Dell Scholarship also provides ongoing support and assistance to address the emotional, lifestyle, and financial challenges that may prevent scholars from completing college. These pressures range from dealing with stress, to managing debt, to tackling substance abuse or child care if life circumstances should require it.

In turn, these scholars serve as positive role models and change the trajectories for their families, friends and communities.

The program awards 400 scholarships annually and has given more than $76 million in college funding since 2004. For more information, visit www.dellscholars.org.
