Richardson ISD DECA Students Advance to State Competition

RISD will be well represented at the State DECA Competition next month after 64 students from Lake Highlands, Pearce and Richardson high schools advanced forward at last weekend’s District 11 DECA competition in Garland.

DECA is an association of marketing students and RISD is among the most competitive in the state. The organization prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high schools and colleges around the globe. Topics covered at the district competition included finance, hospitality, marketing, business, sports and entrepreneurship.

“Many of the students find a career path by being in the DECA program,” said Katie Koshkin, Pearce HS DECA Sponsor. “If you ask my senior competing members what they plan to study in college, many of them would answer business, marketing or finance.”

The evaluation process for competitions involves both a written component—such as an exam or report—and an interactive component with an industry professional serving as a judge. The competitions are designed to simulate real-life business scenarios and test students’ academic understanding and skills development.

DECA’s competitive events directly contribute to every student being college and career ready when they graduate from high school.

“Competitions have taught me that practice makes perfect, but also that failure can be the greatest motivator,” said Mirabella Miranda, Texas DECA District 11 President & Richardson HS DECA President. “DECA has encouraged me to think more about my future and begin working towards goals.”

All RISD club sponsors have extremely high expectations for their teams, anticipating at least half of their students to qualify for the upcoming international competition.
