Lake Highlands Reflector Committee

The Lake Highlands Reflector Committee (LHRC) has been established by RISD for parents, staff members, community members and students to research, discuss and recommend options to the RISD Board of Trustees for accommodating current and projected future enrollment growth in the Lake Highlands area.

RISD is continuing to grow, with the elementary schools feeding into Lake Highlands High School experiencing the highest levels of growth in the district in recent years. The district has constructed 78 additional classrooms at 13 schools across RISD since 2012 to help accommodate increased enrollment, including 52 classrooms at nine schools in Lake Highlands. Despite the additional classrooms, a number of RISD elementary schools have reached capacity in different grade levels and are overflowing students out of their neighborhood school. RISD's demographic projections call for continued moderate growth, and the RISD Board of Trustees has placed funds in the proposed 2016 bond package to create additional capacity in Lake Highlands and other areas of the district.

The LHRC is comprised of parent/staff representatives from each school in the Lake Highlands feeder pattern, members of the Lake Highlands community, LHHS student leaders, central RISD administrators and parent representatives from the other three RISD feeder patterns. The committee will meet regularly beginning in March, with a goal of providing recommendations to the RISD Board of Trustees by April 18.

The committee will be chaired by Dr. Jeannie Stone, RISD Deputy Superintendent of Instruction. As work progresses, summaries of committee activity will be posted on this page.

Parent, community & employee feedback and ideas for the LHRC can be sent to risd@risd.org for distribution to committee members.

Lake Highlands Reflector Committee Update - 4/13/16
Members of the Lake Highlands Reflector Committee held their sixth meeting this week and completed the process of arriving at recommendations to the Board of Trustees regarding ways to address enrollment growth in Lake Highlands.

The group conducted in-depth discussions about the two remaining core options under consideration: 1) construction of one or more K-6 elementary schools, or 2) construction of separate 5th/6th grade centers at both LH-area junior highs.

Both core options have significant support within the committee, and will be presented as recommendations for the RISD Board to consider. Additional, complementary, options with committee support include adding classrooms and/or core spaces on to existing schools, adding magnet programming to an existing school, and using portable classrooms as a temporary measure to accommodate enrollment growth while permanent solutions are being constructed.

During the preceding weeks, the committee evaluated and removed from consideration a number of other core or complementary options to address enrollment growth.

Reflector committee chair, RISD Deputy Superintendent Dr. Jeannie Stone, will present the recommendations to the RISD Board at the April 18 Study Session.
