| RISD Goes Green |
| |
Richardson ISD promotes environmentally responsible behavior through a variety of green initiatives:
Automated Lighting Systems
RISD Facility Services and Energy Management staff upgraded gym lighting with new T-5 fluorescent fixtures that use less than half the energy. Along with instant start capability, the new lights distribute light more evenly and last longer. Motion sensors have also been installed to save additional energy.
The gum lighting and air conditioning systems installed by RISD will save nearly 226,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity per year, which translates into savings of $26,000 annually at the current electric rate. That is equivalent to the carbon dioxide emissions of about 18,400 gallons of gasoline, according to Environmental Protection Agency calculations.

Reduced Wattage Light Bulbs
RISD’s Maintenance & Operations department has begun re-lamping 90,000 fluorescent light bulbs across the district to save energy and maintenance costs. By moving from 32 watt bulbs to 25 watt bulbs, and each new bulb saving RISD 7 watts per hour of operation, savings of $60,000 are expected in the first year.

Computer-Controlled Irrigation Systems
RISD installed computer-controlled irrigation systems at all of its facilities in 2007. The system at each facility monitors the amount of rainfall and ground moisture, adjusting the sprinkling schedule accordingly.
Additionally, the systems are run from solar energy collected at each system site.
Cafeteria Green Days
To conserve energy throughout the school year, elementary school kitchens are offering "Earth friendly” meals every third Wednesday by not using electric equipment such as ovens, steamers and warming cabinets. Meals will consist of nutritious no bake items, such as sandwiches and fruit.
Recycling Districtwide
Dumpsters are located outside each school and district facility for co-mingled/single-stream recyclables.
Additionally, campuses coordinate their own recycling efforts through the use of special recycling containers and student “green teams” that promote environmentally responsible behavior at the campus level.
Recycling Round-Ups
Lake Highlands Elementary recently maintained its "green" title by collecting the most recyclable material among the four City of Dallas-wide locations during the city's annual Recycle Round-Up, an event that offers Dallas residents the opportunity to responsibly dispose of potential landfill fodder, with particular emphasis on electronic waste.
This is the second year LHE has partnered with City of Dallas Sanitation Services and a dozen other vendors for what is fast becoming a popular neighborhood event.
