Instructional Technology

Technology in Classroom (2014)
Why are schools asking parents to buy technology for their classrooms?

Schools should not be asking parents to purchase required technology for classrooms. PTAs can choose to buy additional devices or “extras,” but the district technology cycle provides the appropriate and necessary updated technology to schools. PTAs can choose to enhance what the district provides, but RISD should and does provide required technology for schools.

RISD allows students to bring their own devices and supports the use of personal devices when appropriate to aid instruction. Bond funds pay for many student devices that aid instruction.

Parent support in RISD, including PTAs, is essential and extraordinarily appreciated, but schools should not be actively soliciting funds from parents for required technology.

Technology in Elementary Schools (2014)
Why don’t all elementary schools across the district have the same level of technology in the computer labs and classrooms?  Why do some have more quantity per student and/or more updated technology than others?

Elementary classrooms have the same technology equipment across the district—a projector, speakers, document camera, and a teacher laptop. If they choose, teachers can apply to the Technology Department, for an iPad. Classrooms in grades K-2 have two desktop units, while classrooms in grades 3-6 have 4 netbooks. PTAs, grants, and other campus funds allow for more technology to supplement what the district provides. The exception is the Math, Science & Technology Magnet School (MST), which receives additional technology to support its magnet technology programs.

Planetarium Space (2013)
What are the short and long term plans for the Planetarium facility?

The planetarium space was closed due to budget reductions in 2011. In addition to the ongoing operating expense, the Planetarium equipment needed replacement at substantial capital expense.

The space was repurposed to house district gifted & talented (REACH) programs previously housed in five classrooms within Skyview elementary.  This construction created additional general classroom space to accommodate enrollment growth in the Skyview attendance area. The repurposed space also includes office space for the central REACH staff.  This use was approved in 2012 and work was completed in August, 2013.

Edline Classroom Pages (2013)
How often are teachers required to update assignments and/or class work on Edline?

Edline classroom pages are a valuable communications tool for teachers to share information about their class with students and their parents. RISD teachers are expected to post relevant and useful information as their schedule allows. Any specific requirements are set by the principal. Should students or parents need additional or unavailable class information, they should contact the class teacher. The teacher’s contact information is listed on the Edline classroom page.

Internet Safety/Social Media (2012)
Has the district considered an educational program for students regarding Internet Safety and Social Networking (Facebook) Safeguards?

RISD Library Media Services developed and implemented a districtwide Internet safety curriculum for elementary students.  Librarians and counselors teach Internet safety concepts to students in grades K-6 each year.  Each junior high school and high school individually determines how to best teach their students Internet safety concepts.

RISD Library Media Services developed an online course on Internet safety for parents and community members.  This course is available through the RISD library web sites.

RISD has created an online staff development course covering Internet usage and safety for teachers and staff. All district employees have been required to take the “Social Networking in RISD” course.   New to the district teachers also take the course either during new teacher orientation or throughout the year.

All district employees, students and parents have access to online technology training through a subscription service called Atomic Learning, which includes courses for parents, students and teachers on social networking along with thousands of other topics.

Online Courses (2013)
Does RISD offer online courses?

Students have the option of taking online courses through Texas Virtual School Network with approval from their counselors.

This past summer, RISD offered Touch Systems Data Entry course for students  All students that enrolled in the course successfully completed it. This course will be offered again this summer and may be implemented as a year round course.

For the 13-14 School year, teachers can take online courses for technology professional development credit through Atomic Learning, an online subscription service of video tutorials on various topics.

Teachers have the opportunity to take a 30 hour online Gifted and Talented Institute in order to keep up or prepare for their Gifted and Talented certifications.

Student Email Accounts (2013)
Are RISD students provided with email accounts?

Based upon a recommendation from the Technology Advisory Committee, research was conducted on the best tool for providing student email accounts to RISD students. Google Apps for Education was chosen as the tool to use for student email accounts grades 2-12. Students in these grades have had email accounts since January 2013.

Online Grades & Attendance (2013)
How can I view my child’s grades and attendance online?

Rportal provides parents access to the Star_Portal™ grade book system to view their child's up-to-date cumulative average and assignment grades, report card grades, period-by-period attendance, unofficial transcript, as well as access to view Academic Achievement Test results and the Six Year Graduation Plan (7th-12th grades) during the school year. To create an Rportal account, parents submit the online application located at risd.org/ParentPortal-Signup.

One to One Ratio (2013)
Is it a district goal to achieve a 1:1 student to computer ratio?

The district currently has three 1:1 campuses – MST Elementary Magnet, Richardson West Technology Magnet (junior high), and the STEM Academy (high school) located on the Berkner High School campus.

At this time the district does not have any strategies in the Technology Plan to move all campuses to a 1:1 environment.  The district does support student device coverage through classroom bundles of mobile devices and Bring Your Own Device.
