About the SAT Preparation Course
The RISD SAT course is designed to provide complete preparation for the SAT.  The course includes actual test simulation, fundamental skills review, classroom strategies review, practice tests, and guidance on time management.  Students will receive instruction in math, reading, and writing strategies.  Course instructors are certified math and verbal teachers trained in SAT strategies.

Cost
The fee for this course is $100 for RISD students and $160 for non-RISD students.  The fee covers all books and materials.  Registration received after the postmark deadline must include a nonrefundable $10 late registration fee.  Checks are to be made payable to RISD.  Refunds will be given at 100 percent prior to the first class session (except for the late registration fee, if applicable).  NO REFUNDS will be given after the class has met twice.  The SAT Prep Course is offered once in the fall semester and once in the spring semester.  NOTE:  A limited number of partial scholarships are available each year for those students who need financial assistance; please see your counselor.

Course Location and Times
Students may take the course at the campus of their choice according to what best fits their schedule.  It is offered at a variety of times and days so that each student can take advantage of the course.  Each Saturday class meets for six sessions.  Each weekday class meets for nine sessions.  The following shows the schedule for both the fall and the spring course:

Who should take this course?

  • Any student preparing to take the SAT test will benefit from this course.
  • A student should have completed at least one semester of Algebra 2 in order to be successful in the math portion of this course and on the SAT test.
  • The PSAT is given one time each year in October.  The SAT test is scheduled multiple times in the fall and spring semesters.
  • A sophomore may take the PSAT test as a practice test.
  • A junior will typically take the PSAT in the fall and the SAT in the spring.  PSAT scores of juniors are used by the National Merit Corporation to determine semifinalists in their scholarship competition.
  • A senior may either take the SAT for the first time or retake it to try to earn a higher score.
  • Students may register to take the PSAT and/or SAT through application packets available in the counselor’s office.  They may also register to take the SAT online at www.collegeboard.com.

Important Information

  • SAT Mock Test – A mock SAT will be offered for a fee of $15 at the end of the fall and spring courses.  This test is optional for students but recommended as it shows where students still need to concentrate before taking the actual SAT.  Registration information for the practice test will be sent to parents/students after students have enrolled in the preparation course.
  • Attendance and Homework – Students who fail to do homework or fail to attend class show little improvement on their SAT scores.  We ask for parental help in ensuring that your student attends class and completes all the home assignments.
