We have two short weeks remaining in the semester, and it's hard to believe the year is almost half over. I'd like to recognize and thank our teachers for their professionalism and dedication during this particularly taxing semester. The state's implementation of a new assessment system (the STAAR exam) prompted realignment of our curriculum and presented some new challenges for our teachers. In addition, we are implementing a new learning management system called Edline, which has provided opportunities for our teachers to maintain web pages for the benefit of students and parents. If you are a parent, hopefully you've activated your Edline account, which will enable you to access assignments and calendars for all your child's classes and schools. We hope you enjoy this new service to enhance our communication efforts. Please contact your campus web advisor for details or assistance.
We are including a video message with this edition of School Times Now to highlight our 2011 bond program, provide updates on projects already completed, and preview upcoming projects. I hope you enjoy it.
If you were among the almost 4,000 respondents to our recent 2012-13 Calendar Option Survey, thank you for your feedback. Results were shared with your elected Board of Trustees at the December 5 Regular Meeting, and they took action to approve a final calendar. Please read the story in Board Brief story below for details about the Board's decision. Major Board activity is reported in our publication Board Brief, which is available the day following Regular Meetings and Study Sessions. To access an archive of Board Brief, Board meeting agenda topics and minutes from previous meetings, please visit the BoardBook page via RISD.org.
I'd like to conclude with a note regarding our changing weather. As temperatures drop, the possibility of inclement weather affecting schedules becomes more realistic. Please remember that we communicate with stakeholders regarding school closures or delays through several methods:
- An automated telephone call to all parents and staff members.
-
The RISD homepage at www.risd.org
- The RISD weather line at 469-593-SNOW (7669)
- The RISD Facebook page at facebook.com/richardsonisd
- RISD's Twitter feed at twitter.com/richardsonisd
- Local news media outlets
Thank you for your continued support of Richardson ISD. We appreciate your partnership. >Top

Forest Meadow Students Hold Successful Canned Food Drive |

Forest Meadow Junior High School students collected more than 2,000 cans, boxes and bags of food – nearly 1,700 pounds in all – to help out members of their community before the Thanksgiving holiday.
Led by the FMJH Student Council, the Gobble Goods food drive benefits not only The Network of Community Ministries but also the school's pantry. The Network serves families in need who live within Richardson ISD's boundaries. They collected cans of everything from green beans to soup, as well as dried grains and even toiletries such as shampoo and deodorant.
"A lot of campuses do this, but our campus has a good mix of students – some are really well off, but others have a need," said Carisa Niemeyer, a FMJH choir teacher and Student Council co-sponsor.
In addition to collecting food and leading the drive, students learned about food insecurity and what it means to be in need of assistance.
"Other people need help – we'll always be glad to help," said eighth grader Luke Garwood, FMJH Student Council treasurer.
After stocking the school's pantry, Gobble Goods was able to give 1,645 pounds to The Network, which is a significant donation, said Robin Wilson, director of emergency services for The Network. Schools from throughout RISD held food drives before Thanksgiving, which helps the organization during the busy holiday season.
"In this community, it's amazing how much people give back," Wilson said. "It's a great lesson for the kids." >Top |

Spring Valley Elementary Shows Off Enrichment With Cluster Fair |

Students at Spring Valley Elementary recently showed off the work they've done in enrichment clusters at their first-ever "Cluster Fair."
Parents, teachers and their fellow students got to see projects that included learning about babysitting, recycling and energy efficiency, string art, photography, filmmaking, dance performance and more.
Some projects, such as fantasy football, involved learning about compiling statistics, while others like the recycling group worked to improve the school and community by cleaning up and figuring out ways to reduce energy and water use. (And money raised through recycling aluminum cans will go toward helping to pay for future enrichment activities.) |
| |
|
|
| With enrichment clusters, students select the activities they want to do based on their interests. The goal of schoolwide enrichment is to encourage students to find areas of interest and then to pursue research, hands-on learning and investigation about those topics. >Top |

Methodist Richardson Brings
Robotic Surgical System To Berkner
Berkner High students recently got an up-close look at advanced surgical equipment, thanks to Methodist Richardson Medical Center.
More than 300 students had the opportunity to sit at the surgeon's console and test-drive the da Vinci Robotic Surgical System, using a 3-D simulator program that physicians use to practice finer points of their surgical technique for the system. They also were able to speak with Dr. Richard Salter, an OB/GYN on the Methodist Richardson staff, about robotic surgery.
Most of the students are enrolled in Berkner's Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Magnet.

| |
|
|
"I'm interested in the medical field but I haven't been sure about exactly what I want to do," Berkner senior Tangela Seals, an anatomy student, said. "After talking with the da Vinci surgical representatives, I've realized other options in the medical field aside from being a clinician, which is really exciting."
Berkner STEM Principal Elizabeth Swaner said the da Vinci robot visit helps students to better understand what they learn in the classroom.
"It is opportunities like these where the students get to see how to take what they have learned and be able to apply it to real world technologies," she said.
Thank you to Methodist Richardson Medical Center for providing Berkner students with the opportunity to try out the latest medical technology! >Top |
