AJH's Robotics Team Heading Back to World Championship
This past weekend, Apollo Junior High School’s Ultimate Robotics Team 888G, led by Vincent Nguyen and Ezra Lin, won the W.O.C. Vex Robotics Competition in Dallas and qualified for the VEX Robotics World Championship in April 2010. Additionally, Team 888A led by Josh Anderson, Andrew Ho and Jonathon Leyva, won the Judges Award. In all, Apollo entered 12 teams in the competition.

The Ultimate Robotics Program, in existence less than a year, will have representatives at their second consecutive VEX Robotics World Championship in April after finishing as a top-ten middle school in last spring’s championship.

“We’re very proud of our students’ hard work, dedication and passion for robotics,” said Apollo teacher and team coach Jack Nelson. “We sincerely appreciate our sponsors, UT-Dallas Fearless Engineering and the United State Navy, for their instrumental support.”

The Ultimate Robotics team consists of 34 students that participate in an after school program as well as an in class program. Students meet primarily after school and on weekends. It’s believed to be one of the largest middle school robotics programs in Texas.

The Saturday before the competition, Navy personnel specializing in STEM disciplines (Science, Technology, Math & Engineering) visited Apollo and worked in small groups with students helping them understand design concepts for their robots. The Navy sponsorship is a pilot effort and currently the only one in the U.S.

Last school year, UT-Dallas donated a complete 12’ X 12’ VEX arena for students to practice and perfect designs in. In addition, they’ve donated parts, team uniforms and loaned the team laptop computers for competitions.

The team plans to enter additional competitions in an effort to improve their designs and qualify additional teams for the World Championships in the spring.

ACM Brings Electoral Process to Life to Students
For the third consecutive year, the Arapaho Classical Magnet second grade election day was a huge success with students, staff & parents.

Campaign speeches, signing a Constitution, Secret Service and a walking, talking Statue of Liberty highlighted this year’s much anticipated event. Second-graders and parents listened intently to speeches from fellow classmates running for president and vice president of the second grade.

Flags and VOTE signs were waved, patriotic songs were sung, and after turning in their mandatory voter registration cards, students filed to voting stations to let their electoral voice be heard.

After all the votes were tallied, Diego Renteria was elected president and Kylee Morren vice president, to thunderous applause from all in attendance. >Top

Going bananas for good food at cbe
The students at Carolyn G. Bukhair Elementary are receiving fresh fruits and vegetables for a snack twice a week this year due to extra funding from the US Department of Agriculture. The students anxiously await the arrival of their Child Nutrition staff each week to see what good food they are delivering. Last week for Halloween, the students had a special visitor. “Anna Banana” came with a wheelbarrow full of bananas and gave each child one for their snack. This program involves a team effort from everyone in the school. The P.E. teachers present a short nutrition lesson on the weekly choice of fruit. The students are enjoying their healthy snacks and are learning the benefits of making fresh fruits a part of their diet. >Top

- Continued
PHS Tennis team show their true colors - Continued
Plano west sophomore Parker Cohen is only too aware of Pancreatic cancer. His father, Ron Cohen, was diagnosed with stage 3 of the disease last November. Given only three months to live, Ron has beaten those odds but continues his battle with a regimen of Chemotherapy and a new trial drug that serves as a checkpoint inhibitor.

Ron is not alone in his fight, along with his wife Luann Boggs and their son, the Plano West Booster Club refused to sit idly by. They decided to raise funds hoping to find a cure for the insidious disease by selling and wearing purple t-shirts.

All four J.J. Pearce varsity captains practice with Parker at Canyon Creek Country Club in Richardson, as they train for their individual state and national rankings. Upon learning of the fundraiser they approached Pearce coaches Jim Morrison and Sammi Gunter about abandoning their uniforms and wearing the purple shirts as a sign of solidarity and support. The coaches enthusiastically embraced the idea. “  I am always proud of our kids”, said Coach Morrison, “ but when they want to do something like this, you can’t help but be even prouder."

Friday was a veritable “purple palooza” from the shirts and the socks right down to the purple Gatorade.  The Pearce coaches and athletes also donated money to the Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Network in honor of the Cohens and presented it after the match. Luann Boggs was overwhelmed. “It just touches me to see this community care so much. We are so grateful."

Plano West beat the Mustangs with the exception of the mixed doubles and girls line one singles. “ Losing is never fun,” says senior Varsity Captain Jeffrey Stulmaker, “ but this loss hurt less because even in losing, by participating we won."  Julianne Jackson, a Varsity Captain, said” I really feel for Parker and what his family is going through and it really puts things in perspective."

Even as the two schools competed against one another, it was clear the real rival was cancer.

On the courts and in the stands purple reigned, as did sportsmanship.

Yoga Provides students Innovative Way to Focus in Class - Continued
The children at Christa McAuliffe, RISD’s alternative discipline school, have recently been the beneficiaries of YogaKids, a program that uses learning tools, such as a set of yoga pose cards, to incorporate focus and discipline into the regular curriculum.  PE teacher Grigsby uses YogaKids in his class, but other teachers are also using it as part of their lessons, in accordance with their campus goals for the 09-10 school year.  For example, if Ms. Cieskowski, 1st and 2nd grade teacher, sees that students could use a break from sitting or are not focusing, she pulls out the pose cards and has the students take a quick yoga break to get back on track.

According to school nurse Jennifer Sahadi, studies have shown that programs like YogaKids help keep children physically active, improve discipline and concentration, and help them do better in school academically. “We also see that this program helps teachers maintain discipline and focus in the classroom,” she adds.

Vicki Redpath, the only certified YogaKids instructor in North Texas, recently conducted a seminar for teachers at Christa McAuliffe, explaining how to most effectively use the program.  Ms. Redpath has worked with other RISD schools and has witnessed how the YogaKids program teaches lessons such as acceptance, compassion, and responsibility.

Principal Lorine Burrell, who co-wrote the grant with school nurse Jennifer Sahadi, says, “Students are learning discipline, responsibility, and compassion, as well as improving concentration, while the staff works together toward the goal of maintaining discipline and improving test scores.”  She adds, “The students will be better equipped to achieve personal academic success and the staff is excited about an innovative approach to helping students make positive changes in their lives.”

“Several other RISD schools have used the program and had great results,” says Sahadi.  “At Christa McAuliffe, we don’t have a PTA to purchase items like this so we are thrilled the Excellence Foundation was able to provide the donation for our kids to benefit, too."  >Top
