Westwood Junior High Named National Blue Ribbon School
RISD's Westwood Junior High Math, Science and Leadership Magnet School was named a 2011 National Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education this morning.

The Blue Ribbon Schools Program honors public and private elementary, middle, and high schools that are either high performing or have improved student achievement to high levels, especially among disadvantaged students.

"We are extremely proud of Westwood Junior High for earning this impressive national recognition," said RISD Superintendent Dr. Kay Waggoner. "This news is gratifying and reflects their continued hard work and dedication to student achievement. I encourage the entire RISD community to join me in congratulating Westwood's students, teachers, staff, parents and community partners for a job well done."

The program is part of a larger U. S. Department of Education effort to identify and disseminate knowledge about best school leadership and teaching practices. Each year since 1982, the Department of Education has sought out schools where students attain and maintain high academic goals, including those that beat the odds.

RISD now has 23 National Blue Ribbon schools.
