National Blue Ribbon Schools
Dover Elementary and Lake Highlands Junior High were recently named National Blue Ribbon Schools by the U.S. Department of Education.

The Blue Ribbon Schools Program honors public and private elementary, middle, and high schools that are either high performing or have improved student achievement to high levels, especially among disadvantaged students.

"Both schools should be proud of this national recognition," said RISD Superintendent Dr. Kay Waggoner. "I invite our entire district to join me in congratulating the students, staff, parents and community partners of both campuses."

The program is part of a larger U. S. Department of Education effort to identify and disseminate knowledge about best school leadership and teaching practices. Each year since 1982, the Department of Education has sought out schools where students attain and maintain high academic goals, including those that beat the odds.

RISD now has 22 National Blue Ribbon schools.

RISD Again Leads Texas in TBEC Honor Roll Schools
For the third time in four years, RISD leads the state in schools named to the Texas Business and Education Coalition (TBEC) Honor Roll. Twenty-two RISD schools have been named to the 2010 TBEC Honor Roll, sharing the top honor with Houston ISD.

"The TBEC Honor Roll is the most prestigious award for sustained, academic excellence in Texas," said Ken Zornes, TBEC Executive Director. "It recognizes schools that have demonstrated three years of consistent, high performance in all subjects compared to other schools serving similar student populations. TBEC Honor Roll schools have the highest percentage of students performing at the state's most rigorous standard -commended- in every subject."

Of the more than 8,000 public schools in Texas, only 252 were named to the TBEC Honor Roll, placing them in the top four percent of public schools in Texas.

Week One at Parkhill: Help Others
The first week of school is typically one for getting comfortable, making new friends and learning routines. At Parkhill Junior High, it was also a week to helping others. As a service project during their advisory periods, the entire eighth grade class at Parkhill handmade more than 90 blankets to benefit young children at Our Children's House at Baylor, a pediatric therapy facility.

"We were looking for a service project that would reinforce with students the importance of helping others, and at the same time, place students in comfortable small groups working together to enhance collaboration and facilitate friendships the first week," said Parkhill Counselor Leslie Goodman.

Jennifer Weems, a Child Life Specialist at Our Children's House at Baylor, accepted the blankets on behalf of their small patients and offered students a heartfelt thanks for their time & service.

In all, more than 270 Parkhill eighth graders participated, and the project was completed by Friday of the first week of school. In addition to school staff, the Parkhill PTA was instrumental to the project's success. >Top

National merit semifinalists announced
Richardson Independent School District has announced that 12 seniors have been named National Merit Semifinalists for the 2010-2011 academic year, making them eligible for consideration to receive a National Merit Scholarship.

The students represent some of the top academic performers in the United States.

More than 1.4 million juniors in nearly 21,000 high schools entered the 2010 National Merit Program by taking the PSAT which serves as the initial screen of program entrants. They represent less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors and the highest scoring entrants in each state.

The number of semifinalists in a state is proportional to the state's percentage of the national total of graduating seniors.

"These outstanding students deserve congratulations for a job well done," said RISD Superintendent Dr. Kay Waggoner. "To be named among the best is a great achievement for them and those who have helped them along the way. The district is proud of them."

Students enter the National Merit competition by scoring well on PSAT tests, usually taken junior year, and advance in the program based on their skills, accomplishments and subsequent SAT scores. These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition to receive one or more of 8,200 merit scholarships worth more than $30 million.
