Jess Harben Elementary third grader Alex Santoni had a memorable last morning of the school year. Richardson Fire Department Engine 4 picked him up at his home and drove him to school, where his classmates, cheerleaders and teachers were waiting to greet him outside.
Santoni was chosen to kick off the new Read To Ride Program, which is a partnership between the Richardson Fire Department and Richardson ISD.
Students who reach independent reading goals over the summer and throughout the year will have an opportunity to ride to school on a Richardson fire truck or ride with their family and the Fire Chief in the annual Richardson Christmas Parade.
The program was created by Richardson Firefighter/Paramedic Billy Whitson, who worked with Jess Harben Principal Nicole Farrar-Myers, Librarian Doug Valentine and Counselor Nancy Weisell. >Top

Desegregation Case Set for Trial |
Richardson ISD has been operating under a federal desegregation order since 1970, which imposes federal judicial supervision on various district operations. Many school districts around the state and country have operated under civil rights-era desegregation orders.
Over the years, many of those districts have successfully sought unitary status – which is the process through which a district asks the court to dismiss the desegregation litigation.
The RISD Board of Trustees authorized the district to begin the process of seeking unitary status in 2009, so that more local control would be returned to the district, which will enhance operational efficiency and flexibility.
To obtain unitary status, a school district must establish that it has eliminated the vestiges of past discrimination and that is has complied with the court's orders.
The federal court has set this matter for trial beginning June 11, 2012. RISD is hopeful that the court will agree that the district has attained unitary status and that federal supervision under the 42 year old court order no longer is necessary. >Top

PCE Kindergartners and First Graders get a hands-on science safety lesson. |
Students watching Mentos geysers may not seem like a learning experience, but it is when the experiment is in the hands of Prairie Creek Elementary fifth and sixth graders. During the school's fifth annual Science Day, fifth and sixth graders spent every spare moment of the last weeks of school preparing hands-on science lessons, complete with supplies, videos, songs, and rewards, for kindergarten and first grade students.
The day at PCE, which is modeled after the UTD "Kids in Chemistry Day" directed by professor John Seibert, proved such a great success its first year that it continues to be an excellent way to teach primary students additional science skills while providing older students as role models. More than 30 parent volunteers joined the PCE staff to move with the student groups through the stations that taught such concepts as density, buoyancy, measurement, science safety and the water cycle. >Top
