RHS Senior Named Gates Millennium Scholar

Richardson High School Senior Alesha Cooper was recently awarded a Gates Millennium Scholarship, an honor that will allow her to fully pay for both undergraduate and graduate college studies.

"It's about opportunity," Alesha said. "If people give me the opportunity to succeed, I will."

Alesha, a student in the RHS AVID program, is the first Gates Scholar from RHS and has also been selected as a Dell Scholar, another prestigious scholarship program. She plans to study mathematics at the University of Virginia.

"She has developed into an amazing young lady," said Elizabeth Brown, RHS AVID Coordinator and Alesha's 12th grade AVID teacher. "She supports her classmates, but she also supports the program as well."

Alesha, 18, helps tutor younger students and founded a club for older RHS students to mentor younger girls at the school. She attributes her success as a student and a person to her mother and Katie Fisher, Alesha's 9th-11th grade AVID teacher and currently her calculus teacher.

Ultimately, Alesha said, she wants to be an advocate for at-risk students.

"I have a saying: You can't ridicule students for their failures if you don't contribute to their success," she said.

The Gates Millennium Scholars program is funded by a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and provides support to minority students with significant financial need. In addition to scholarship money, the program provides academic and other support to students such as leadership development programs. >Top

Seven RISD students were recently named as winners of the prestigious Dell Scholars Award, the largest total in a single year for RISD and the most Dell Scholars for a single school district in the United States this year.

Just 300 students are selected for the $20,000 scholarship each year, and only one other school district in the nation has seven 2012 Dell Scholars. Recipients are selected based upon students' individual determination to succeed, future goals and plans to achieve them, ability to communicate the hardships they have overcome, self-motivation in completing challenging coursework and a demonstrated need for financial assistance.

Students selected as Dell Scholars must also be enrolled in a college readiness/college access program. Each of the seven RISD students selected are enrolled in the AVID program.

"We're preparing our students to succeed in life," said Carmen Steward, RISD's AVID director. "We set high expectations, and we support them academically and socially. Most of all, we believe in them."

Congratulations to the following Dell Scholars:

  • Alesha Cooper, Richardson High School
  • Stephanie Eyocko, Lake Highlands High School
  • Christopher Hendrix, Berkner High School
  • Muneerah Jemal, Richardson High School
  • Sha'Huni Robinson, Richardson High School
  • Tangela Seals, Berkner High School
  • Ai-My Tran, Berkner High School

RSRS Luncheon Highlights Liberty Junior High
Liberty Junior High recently hosted a luncheon for members of Realtors Supporting Richardson Schools, an organization of realtors who work within RISD boundaries.

Students and Principal Stephen Quisenberry spoke to the realtors about the school's strong academic performance, extracurricular opportunities and Liberty's other accomplishments.

The partnership with RSRS has grown into a strong relationship between an important part of the business community and the school district. Through the partnership, people working in the real estate industry learn about RISD, its schools and its programs so they can better explain the benefits of living within the district to potential homebuyers. >Top

Reminder: RISD to Implement Text/SMS Messaging to Parents on April 27
On April 27, Richardson ISD will enable text/SMS messaging from their child's school to parents and guardians as another way to share information with parents.

The messages will be part of the existing Blackboard Connect automated notification system that RISD uses to send telephone and email messages to parents and employees. Messages may include emergency alerts and reminders about school events. All automated messages to parents and guardians are currently delivered via telephone, with some messages also being sent as an email.

Starting April 27, schools will also also have the option of sending an abbreviated version of telephone messages as a text/SMS message.

In the afternoon of April 27, all parent and guardian primary telephone contact numbers will be sent an initial confirmation text message from RISD notifying them that text service has begun, and including simple reply instructions to opt out from future text messages if the parent or guardian desires.

Parents and guardians who wish to continue receiving text/SMS messages from their child's school will not need to do anything.

As with any text/SMS messages, normal message or usage rates may apply depending on the mobile service plan that a parent or guardian uses.

To receive text/SMS messages, the primary phone number on file with the child's school must be enabled to receive text/SMS messages, which is typically a mobile phone or device.

Parents who wish to change the primary contact number on file with their child's school should contact the student data specialist at that school.

For more information, please read the FAQs here. >Top

UTD Go Centers Help RISD Students Prepare for College
As RISD seniors make final preparations for college and careers, they are receiving guidance from those who have recent experience making the transition out of high school – students from UT Dallas.

Through UTD's College Mentoring Program, students have worked this year in the Berkner, Lake Highlands and Pearce College and Career Centers, assisting the high school counselors as they help RISD students. They bring the experience of students who have made the transition from high school to college in recent years.

"I was a first-generation college student," said Josselin Garibo, a UTD junior who has worked at Pearce. "I kind of had to do it alone."

The students working in the UTD Go Centers have helped with college selection and applications, as well as seeking financial aid. Most of their work has been focused on high school seniors, though some juniors have sought assistance.

Part of the mentors' work has been to get the word out that an extra resource is available to students at the high schools.

"Some of the students are really prepared," Garibo said. "But some people don't even know what we can help them with." >Top

Special Student Services Spotlight
The Special Student Services Department of the RISD is comprised of Special Education, Health Services, Dyslexia, Section 504 and Response to Intervention (RtI). The department's goal is to provide information and support to facilitate the successful implementation of programming. It is with this in mind that various divisions of the department will be routinely highlighted below.

In Focus Special Education: Special education includes services and supports to identified students in a way that addresses the students' individual differences and needs.

Decisions about appropriate services and supports are made by the Admission, Review and Dismissal (ARD) Committee. This committee is comprised of relevant district staff and the student's parent(s).

The Texas Legal Framework, a website sponsored by the Region 18 Educational Service Center, offers quick online access to critical information related to special education programs.

MHE Sponsors Tornado Relief Campaign
Even before North Texas’ recent bout of tornadoes, the students at Moss Haven Elementary wanted to help the victims of the Midwestern tornadoes. The storms in the Metroplex just brought the need closer to home.

REACH (RISD's Gifted and Talented program) students planned the school-wide fund raisers. Students in grades 1-4 planned, advertised, baked and sold baked-good items, while 5th and 6th graders used the current duct tape craze to create pens, bows (featuring “torna-bows” and funnel-topped pens) and other items to sell. They also sold yellow bricks to build a yellow brick road to help Kansas (and other states) return to normal.

With a goal of $500, the students held after-school sales for several days. The support of students, parents and staff was so great that MHE was able to donate $613.50 to the American Red Cross. >Top
