At the April 4 Board meeting, RISD provided an update about recent legislative hearings in Austin. The House passed a $164.5 billion budget under HB 1, which includes nearly $10 billion in cuts to public education. HB 1's potential impact to RISD is a loss of state funding ranging between $27-$34 million. What happens next? HB 1 heads to the Senate, and we are hopeful, based on recent conversations with Sen. Shapiro, that the Senate will find additional revenue sources. Many officials predict that the Senate plan is likely to contain approximately $10 billion in additional state revenue. RISD will continue communications with our elected officials and keep stakeholders informed throughout the process. Many critical discussions will occur over the next 30-60 days in Austin. As a reminder, the legislative session is ongoing, and multiple scenarios will be discussed prior to final decisions on funding.
RISD's next steps? A Stakeholder Budget Survey is now available online. Recently, the district solicited employees' input on possible budget reduction items, and we are asking for district stakeholders to provide input as well. The budget survey is available online through Wednesday, April 13. Visit www.risd.org and click on the green survey link. Thank you for sharing your input with us. Questions? We appreciate your continued support of RISD. >Top |

Richardson ISD announced its ten 2010-2011 STARS (Superior Teaching Achievements in RISD) teachers of the year through surprise classroom visits Wednesday.
The RISD Excellence in Education Foundation, the district's non-profit foundation working directly for all RISD students and staff, administered the selection and recognition of this year's STARS teachers. Students and colleagues cheered as the teachers were surprised in their classrooms (or at the front entrance, due to TAKS testing), with flowers, balloons and an oversized check for $1,000.
These STARS winners were nominated by their schools and will be honored at the Excellence in Education Foundation Gala on April 8, and the REA/Board of Trustees Banquet on May 19.
Congratulations to all the winners, who represent some of this year's best teachers in a district known for excellent educators.

More than 500 Dallas area kids recently showed up for March Madness, Lake Highlands style, at the 8th annual Hoops in the Highlands basketball tournament.
A entertaining day of basketball, a pool of fantastic prizes and a successful fundraising effort resulted in another great year for Hoops.
Highland Oaks Church of Christ once again played host to the three-on-three basketball tournament on Saturday, March 26th.
The result was estimated $25,000 raised to benefit Lake Highlands, White Rock, Wallace and Northlake elementary schools, along with Lake Highlands Junior High.
"Hoops in the Highlands sponsors and the Lake Highlands community work as a team to pull this event together each year," said event chair Scott Swanner. "I think it's a great chance for everyone to get to know each other better."
"We had a great day of basketball, the weather cooperated, and our 130 teams had a fun day in the sun."
It was an all day event for the entire family. The little kids hit the Dr Pepper Fun Zone and filled the bounce houses and slides.
Concessions included neighborhood favorites from Mariano's, Primo Brothers Pizza, and Raising Canes.
Members of the Wallace Elementary Dads Club grilled up brats and hot dogs for competitors and fans.
From ticket takers to court monitors, it took well over 100 volunteers to make Saturday's tournament happen.
Hoops in the Highlands has continued to grow in popularity and success with each passing year.
Thanks to everyone for another great day of hoops!

A team of five RISD high school students recently took 2nd place at the Construction Challenge Championship Finals held in Las Vegas, competing against school teams advancing from throughout the US and Canada.
The team includes Max Anderson (Richardson HS), Molly Francis (Pearce HS), Andrew Matsil (Pearce HS), Aaron Kawalsky (Pearce HS) and Kathleen Francis (Pearce HS).
The Construction Challenge is a joint effort by The Association of Equipment Manufactures (AEM) and Destination Imagination (DI) whose goal is to develop the workforce of the future with teen participants competing and solving infrastructure, manufacturing design, and service tech Challenges using teamwork, creativity and problem solving.
The team competed in two challenges, Road Rumble and H2Oh Yeah! In Road Rumble, the team had to design and build a remote controlled vehicle that delivered supplies to a building site where the team had to construct a structure according to a schematic provided one minute before competition. The vehicle had to travel across three different roads with various obstacles to deliver the supplies. They had 15 minutes to complete the task. The RISD team placed 1st in the Road Rumble challenge and received a special award for Outstanding Design.
In the H2Oh Yeah! Challenge, the team competed in quiz bowl fashion, answering questions about water infrastructure policy issues. Then they had to compete in hands-on instant challenges such as designing and building a bridge across a water structure and designing a device to launch objects into another water structure.

Their combined scores from both challenges placed the RISD team 2nd overall, missing 1st place by 2.33 points. Each student received an Xbox and an iPad for their efforts.

Congratulations to these outstanding and creative RISD students! >Top |

RISD Planetarium to Host: Yuri's Night |

Yuri's Night: April 12, 2011 from 6 - 7:30 p.m.
Human Spaceflight became a reality 50 years ago with the launch of a bell-shaped capsule called "Vostok 1." The capsule was carrying Soviet Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, who took his place in history as the first human to leave the bounds of Earth and enter outer space.
Exactly 20 years later, the United States embarked on a new era in spaceflight with the inaugural launch of a new type of spaceship — the Space Shuttle. Designed to carry a larger crew and large volumes of cargo to orbit, the Space Shuttles became synonymous with human spaceflight for an entirely new generation of young people.
When the next 20-year point arrived, that generation (often called "Gen X") laid a new space milestone by connecting thousands of people around the world to celebrate and honor the past, while building a stairway to the future. That event was Yuri's Night, and it continues to bring the excitement, passion and promise of space travel closer to people of all ages, nationalities and backgrounds.
Come join us for an Open House, celebrating the history of space travel!
