RISD Nurses Recognized
SVE secretary Betsy Davis and nurse Sherry Freeland.
North principal Melissa Gassman and "Great" nurse Valerie King.
Sherry Freeland, the school nurse at Spring Valley Elementary, made a trip to Austin last week to receive the "Outstanding Award" in the Awards for Excellence in Texas School Health Program. The Awards for Excellence in Texas School Health Program recognize and promote effective school health programs and initiatives that strive to continually improve the lifelong health of students, staff and the greater school community.

Sherry developed the Super Stars Fitness Program at SVE, now in its fourth successful year. It was created as a proactive way of educating students and parents about Type 2 Diabetes and how a healthy lifestyle can help prevent this disease. Sherry says that, "this program is successful because it focuses on the parent-child team practicing successful diet and exercise strategies together.”

In addition, North Junior High nurse Valerie King was recently named to the prestigious "Great 100 Nurses" list for the metroplex. It is rare for a school nurse to earn this recognition competing with the bedside nurses in the area's outstanding healthcare facilities.

Congratulations Sherry and Valerie! >Top

Audelia Creek Family Health Night
Audelia Creek Elementary School recently hosted their Third Annual Family Health & Fitness Night. Over 100 students and their families gathered with faculty and staff to learn more about healthy living. A dentist and nutritionist were on hand to visit with parents while students made a healthy snack and practiced proper dental care techniques. Everyone got “physical” with activities including yoga, digi-walking, and dance revolution. It was a fun, educational evening and a great way for the ACE family to shake the winter doldrums! >Top
