Weather Notifications reminder
In the event of school closure due to inclement weather, RISD.org will display a red message at the top of the page. If classes are to continue as scheduled, a green message will be displayed.
The safety of our students and staff is a priority if bad weather is predicted. Several RISD departments (transportation, facilities, grounds) stand ready to assess the condition of the roads and school facilities should ice and/or snow make travel hazardous.

Based on their assessment of the road conditions, and consultation with surrounding districts, RISD’s Superintendent will determine if schools in Richardson ISD will be delayed or closed for the safety of students and staff.

In the event of inclement weather that may require classes to be delayed or cancelled, parents and employees will be notified by telephone message of any decision by 6:30 a.m.

In addition, patrons can call the district's inclement weather line at 469-593-SNOW (7669), check the RISD homepage at www.risd.org, sign up to receive RISD's Twitter updates, or monitor major local media outlets.

Since the implementation of the Blackboard Connect mass telephone notification system, campus phone trees for poor weather are no longer necessary, as all employees and parents will receive a call simultaneously with closure news.

This is another great reason for parents to ensure their child's campus has accurate contact information. >Top

Toys for Tots
The U.S. Marines carried out a special mission before the winter break, as a helicopter made stops at selected North Texas campuses to benefit Toys For Tots. The final stop was Richardson North Junior High where students and staff held a toy drive to benefit the worthy cause. Marine General William Gossell spoke to students about their generous donations and the families they were helping. North was chosen for the stop because two students, Zoe Luptowski and Sam Long, had previously donated their own birthday gifts to Toys For Tots when they were students at Prairie Creek Elementary, and the Marines wanted to honor them for their gesture.

Thank you to North students and staff, the United States Marine Corps and Bell Helicopter for making the holiday season brighter for north Texas families in need. >Top

Bowie student wins 2009 AT&T cotton bowl Art contest
Recently, Bowie Elementary student Emily Halligan won first place in the AT&T Cotton Bowl Art Contest. The contest is open to all North Texas students in first through sixth grade. A total of 18 young artists were selected from over 2,000 entries comprising three age categories (1st & 2nd, 3rd & 4th and 5th & 6th grade) from the North Texas area.

The AT&T art contest is a community-based event created to promote goodwill throughout the North Texas area. All artwork entries are laminated and given out in area hotels and restaurants as a way to welcome visitors to the city for the Cotton Bowl.

As a first place winner, Emily received tickets to the Cotton Bowl game, a Cotton Bowl gift package and presented her drawing to one of the head coaches at the Big Play Luncheon on last week. >Top

JJ Pearce Holiday Gift and Food Drive for Bukhair Elementary
Before the break, the JJ Pearce Student Council collected food, clothing, and toys for more than 100 students from Bukhair Elementary. The Student Council, with the aid of sponsor Rebecca Keeton, solicited donations from Pearce students and faculty who adopted Bukhair Elementary students and shopped for items on their wish lists. Officers from the Student Council then volunteered on a Saturday morning to distribute the gifts to smiling Bukhair families who greatly appreciate this annual event. >Top

Liberty Junior High Beta Club Food Drive
The Liberty Junior High Beta Club recently sponsored the 3rd Annual Beta Club Food Drive, a school-wide food drive to benefit LJH students and families through Communities in Schools. The total donation count was 1,665 cans of food and $325 in cash. This provided 30 families with backpacks of food for Thanksgiving and another 25 families financial help over the Winter Break through Communities in Schools. All remaining food was donated to the local food bank. Contributions this year doubled from last year's effort and helped twice as many families. Four classes earned special parties by donating the most food: Mr. Challenger, Mr. Lowman, Ms. Allison and Mr. Flynn. Liberty is proud of the efforts of all students who gave from the heart (and their pantry) to help out others during the holiday season. >Top

This year The Lady Eagles Track team chose to donate the toys collected to Dobie Primary's Holiday Toy Program. >Top
