Nursing Qualifications Who is the School Nurse? A School Nurse must be a Registered Nurse (R.N.) licensed to practice nursing as mandated by the Board of Nurse Examiners for the State of Texas. The National Association of School Nurses (NASN) believes that a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university is the appropriate preparation for entry into School Nursing. The RISD currently requires a bachelor's degree to be employed as a School Nurse and also has on staff master's-level prepared School Nurses. A School Nurse is a professional who is accountable to practice in accordance with the Professional Standards of School Nursing Practice as stated by the NASN and must follow the state and federal education and health laws impacting children. School Nurses are required by the Nurse Practice Act to fulfill continuous education requirements on a yearly basis in order to maintain their license to practice.
