2008-2009
The Board of Trustees and Superintendent strongly encourages service learning as an integral component of adopted Goal 2: We will develop individual and civic responsibility.
Sharing time and talents for the benefit of others is an important part of displaying individual and civic responsibility that is reflected through our District’s goals and valued by our community. This requires sensitivity, perception of need, determination, perseverance, and dedication. Beginning with the class of 2003, students will be recognized at graduation for voluntary service hours. This recognition will reflect the completion of a service learning project in the student’s area of choice. Criteria to earn this award will be shared with all high school seniors.
Rationale
-
Service Learning combines meaningful service to the community with the RISD educational experience
-
Service Learning helps students make the connection between classroom and community learning and ensures they understand the extent to which they can impact positive change
-
By teaching students about the role they can play in the Richardson community, service learning also encourages life-long civic participation
-
By relating activities to real-life experiences, service learning improves workplace skills and enhances character development among our District students
-
Service Learning gives District students a sense of competency, seeing themselves as active contributors rather than passive recipients of community support
