T-TESS in RISD
The Texas Education Agency (TEA) has approved a new teacher appraisal system. In 2016-17, PDAS will be replaced by the Texas Teacher Evaluation and Support System (T-TESS). T-TESS is designed to support teachers in their professional growth and development. Implementation of the new teacher appraisal system in RISD will begin in the 2016-17 school year.

T-TESS was originally developed by a steering committee comprised of teachers, principals and representatives from higher education and educator organizations, and it was piloted by more than 60 school districts in 2014-15. The system was then refined with input from more than 250 pilot districts in 2015-16. RISD participated in the student learning objectives (SLO) pilot, which is expected to be part of the new evaluation system in 2017-18. The T-TESS rubric focuses on four dimensions which include:
  • Planning
  • Instruction
  • Learning Environment
  • Professional Practice and Responsibilities
Teacher Compensation and T-TESS in RISD
Historically, RISD has had a performance-based compensation system in which an employee's performance has determined whether or not an employee is eligible to receive a compensation increase approved by the Board (see Local DEA). To ensure the district's focus on attracting and retaining high performing staff, compensation will be differentiated to reward teachers who meet performance expectation on the new T-TESS and who exceed performance expectations by meeting additional criteria approved by the board.
