The class of 2006 participated in the following sessions:

January
The first meeting took them to the Administration Building for introductions, on a bus trip to Heights Elementary for breakfast, and to Westwood Junior High for their first day of school -- complete with the Pledge of Allegiance, class rules and school supplies.

February
Finance – Played Balancing Act, the board game designed to teach about Texas public school finance

March
Inside RISD met in March at Lake Highlands High School to learn about Fine Arts. Students participated in a discussion panel, practiced for the UIL One-Act Play competition, and played and sang for the group. Class participants enjoyed touring fine arts classes, including band, choir, orchestra, and art rooms. A special art show was set up in the library for the class, and they dined on a 'fine arts' breakfast of quiche, yogurt and fresh fruit.

April
In April, Inside RISD community members attended a class featuring Instructional Technology. The class also traveled to the Administration Annex to learn about the district's technology Help Desk and technology infrastructure.

May
In May, Inside RISD members visited with Student Services staff to learn about truancies, safety and security, drug prevention, guardianships and much more.

June
Governance and Administration

August
Members of the Inside RISD community class spent one August morning learning how RISD prepares for the first day of school. Breakfast at the bus lot gave participants an overview of how Transportation works. A guided tour of the Facility Services area showed how the district handles work orders, the energy management system, grounds, irrigation, water conservation, security and much more.

September
Curriculum and Instruction – the Planetarium and Enterprise City

In October, the class will learn about Athletics and Extracurricular Activities, and in November, Accountability and Staff Development.

In December, the class will graduate and be ready to spread the good news about RISD schools.

This first year, as described to the class, is a learning experience not only for participants, but for the district on how best to shape future classes. The class of 2007 will have a few changes in the order of the presentations, and probably not meet at all in the summer months. Classes will be streamlined, and adult-style learning with demonstrations, activities and tours.

Community members who are interested in joining the 2007 class should talk with their local school principals about nomination.
